Vitamin B12 is found almost exclusively in animal products, especially in fish, fish eggs, meat, liver, cheese and dairy products. Studies indicate that lack of vitamin B12 is more prevalent than previously thought, especially in the elderly. Often, vitamin B6 and folic acid are also missing at the same time. Therefore, it is important to get folic acid and vitamin B6 at the same time as B-12 vitamin. A lack of B12, folic acid and B6 may be due to too little of the vitamins in the diet, digestive disturbances and absorption in the body, metabolic problems or increased need for one or more of the vitamins. The absorption of vitamin B12 is dependent on a protein formed in the gastric mucosa. Lack of protein, also called “intrinsic factor”, can lead to anemia and damage to the nerves. Vitamin B12 is absorbed in the small intestine, and calcium is required for this uptake.
